Seconds or milliseconds?
Both work. The unit is detected from the magnitude, so a ten-digit value is read as seconds and a thirteen-digit one as milliseconds — the mix-up that puts dates in 1970 or in the far future.
What is the Unix epoch?
Midnight UTC on 1 January 1970. A Unix timestamp counts the seconds elapsed since then, which is why zero is that moment and negative values are earlier.
Does it handle timezones and daylight saving?
Yes. Timestamps are absolute; the timezone only affects how they are displayed. Conversions use your browser’s timezone database, so daylight saving is applied correctly for the date in question.
What is ISO 8601?
The standard textual format, like 2026-08-09T14:30:00Z. It sorts correctly as plain text and is unambiguous across locales, which is why most APIs expect it.
