What contrast ratio do I need?
WCAG AA asks for 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text. AAA raises that to 7:1. The checker shows the ratio and which levels it passes.
Why does my grey text fail on white?
Mid greys fail more often than people expect. A common mid grey lands around 2.5:1 on white, well under the 4.5 required. Going one or two steps darker usually fixes it.
Do I need different colours for dark mode?
Usually yes, and often from opposite ends of the scale. A grey that passes on white can fail on a dark background and the reverse, so each theme needs checking on its own.
When is HSL more useful than HEX?
When you want a family of related colours. Holding hue and saturation while varying lightness gives a consistent scale, which is awkward to do by editing hex digits.
